Does anyone else find it slightly strange how much attention has been attracted in the media and around the world by Angry Birds? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very polished game that’s for sure, and a lot of fun to play, but it’s amazing how much attention it’s received even though it’s really nothing more than the hundreds or even thousands of flash based games that are on the internet at the moment.
It surprises me that games which would be considered average as browser based games are suddenly classics and high earners when they are ported to mobile phones. Maybe people are more forgiving of games when they are on a mobile phone and are less likely to criticize. Maybe people always would have been willing to pay 50p for a flash based game as long as it was polished and reasonably fun to play. I think the success of Apple’s store has even surprised them – who would have thought that games such as Angry Birds, which are relatively basic and focus on one dynamic, could have gone global and even have a film based on them. It’s fantastic that it’s happened – and I like how game makers are allowed to be much more creative in games for mobile devices than they can be with multi million pound budgets. Ultimately I think the success of app stores will be a good thing for the games industry.
